Go Germany! Germany has a very high level of employment

Audencia's Career Center and Alumni teams are delighted to to bring you “Go Germany!”, the guide to working in Germany. This guide holds special significance as we celebrate the remarkable career of one of our esteemed professors, Uwe Supper, German Professor at Audencia and the Careers Adviser for Germany. Throughout his tenure, Uwe has adeptly crafted valuable connections between Audencia and Germany. Building on the positive outcomes of our previous guides, including Go France and Go Netherlands, it is now time for Germany to take center stage as a welcoming destination for our diverse community of students and alumni. As the economic powerhouse of Europe, known for placing a strong emphasis on efficiency, environmental awareness and a good work-life balance, Germany stands out as a compelling choice for all those in pursuit of an international career, and we are excited to help you discover the opportunities it offers.   “Go Germany!” is a valuable resource for students and recent graduates wishing to head to Germany after their studies at Audencia.   This week, discover what Huyen Bahr from Vietnam has to say. About Huyen: GRADUATED FROM THE MSC INTERNATIONAL MANAGEMENT PROGRAMME IN 2012 FROM VIETNAM CURRENT POSITION: OPERATIONS SPECIALIST AT APPLE RETAIL GERMANY B.V. & CO. KG AND CEO/FOUNDER AT BAHR HAAR IN MUNICH NATIVE LANGUAGE: VIETNAMESE DAILY WORKING LANGUAGES: GERMAN AND ENGLISH GERMAN LEVEL: EXPERT BEEN LIVING IN GERMANY FOR: 10 YEARS Huyen's key message: “Germany has a very high level of employment" My biggest challenge Not having a higher education degree from a German university. Myths & realities MYTH: It's better if you know German. It's also better if you have a local German degree. Jobs in Germany are given based purely on hard skills. REALITY: There are many career opportunities in Germany. The current most in-demand jobs are in Information Technology, Banking, Telecommunications, Engineering, Marketing, and Construction. My advice & top tips Do a Google search: “Personaldienstleister” = “recruitment agencies” in Germany. Quirky & cultural The German work culture means employees always turn up on time and do a full day's work. They are in turn rewarded with fair pay and good working conditions. Everyone in Germany wants every task, big or small, to be completed as effectively as possible, and delivered on time. And finally... It's better if you know how to speak German. Most locals can speak English, but they still prefer German. Follow this link to read Go Germany in full

Go Germany! Germany is a beautiful country, full of opportunities

Audencia's Career Center and Alumni teams are delighted to to bring you “Go Germany!”, the guide to working in Germany. About Nicolas: GRADUATED FROM THE EUROPEAN & INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MANAGEMENT PROGRAMME IN 2018  FROM COLOMBIA CURRENT POSITION: STRATEGIC OPERATIONS ANALYST AT IMMOWELT IN BAYERN - NÜRNBERG NATIVE LANGUAGE: SPANISH DAILY WORKING LANGUAGES: GERMAN OTHER LANGUAGES: SPOKEN: FRENCH AND ENGLISH GERMAN LEVEL: ADVANCED BEEN LIVING IN GERMANY FOR: 4 YEARS Nicolas' key message: “Germany is a beautiful country, full of opportunities for those wishing to take up the challenge!" My biggest challenge The language! Myths & realities MYTH: Normally Germans are considered cold and unfriendly, however this is a myth. Germans are great in every way. They are truly respectful, trustful, and friendly people. Once you have lived in this beautiful country you will clearly understand that it is pretty easy to build relations and connections here. REALITY: Germans in general are very trustful, open-minded and reliable co-workers/ people. It may initially take some time for them to open up. Colleagues respect punctuality. My advice & top tips A limited knowledge of the language could hinder your chances of landing a great job, or climbing the corporate ladder. German is mandatory if you want to succeed and remove any type of intercultural barrier. Do not be afraid to speak German. While your German may not be perfect, no one will judge you. Quite the contrary, everybody will cheer you on and help you to get better and better, day-by-day. Quirky & cultural One big truth is that Germans are pretty organised, and this is one of their key factors of success. The art of doing and executing things clearly helps you to master complex environments. And finally... Be proactive and apply for a job/internship even though there may not be a job opening. Recruiters are constantly on the lookout for new talent and highly motivated people. Follow this link to read Go Germany in full

Go Germany! Lunch breaks can be quite short and coffee breaks are a rarity!

Audencia's Career Center and Alumni teams are delighted to to bring you “Go Germany!”, the guide to working in Germany. About Pauline: GRADUATED FROM THE MASTER IN MANAGEMENT (GRANDE ECOLE) PROGRAMME IN 2015  FROM FRANCE CURRENT POSITION: REPORTING AND CONSOLIDATION MANAGER AT VINCI ENERGIES EUROPE EAST IN FRANKFURT AM MAIN NATIVE LANGUAGE: FRENCH DAILY WORKING LANGUAGES: GERMAN AND FRENCH OTHER LANGUAGES SPOKEN: ENGLISH GERMAN LEVEL: ADVANCED BEEN LIVING IN GERMANY FOR: 8 YEARS Pauline's key message: “Lunch breaks can be quite short and coffee breaks are a rarity!" My biggest challenge Learning German at first! When many colleagues speak about different topics over lunch for example, it´s not easy to get a word in! Myths & realities MYTH: Working in Germany does not mean narrow-minded people and a lack of spontaneity. It depends on the person as opposed to the nationality. REALITY: Managers are always available and take your opinion into account, even if you are junior. And you will be judged on your results rather than on the long hours you put in at the office. My advice & top tips Think about finding French companies with a subsidiary in Germany and where French stands to be an asset, or international companies where you could speak English to begin with. Quirky & cultural Up to the age of 30-35, the number of men and women in companies is fairly balanced, particularly in the western part of Germany. When couples decide to have children, the women spend at least one year on maternity leave, then come back part-time, which causes a huge gap between women´s and men´s careers from this time. And finally... If you have a first-time experience in Germany, I would advise you look for accommodation in a WG (Wohngemeinschaft= flatsharing). This will allow you to meet new people easily. Go Germany! While Germany may not sound as sexy & exotic as many other destinations, don't be fooled

Audencia's Career Center and Alumni teams are delighted to to bring you “Go Germany!”, the guide to working in Germany. About Axel: GRADUATED FROM THE MASTER IN MANAGEMENT (GRANDE ECOLE) PROGRAMME IN 2019  FROM FRANCE CURRENT POSITION: SALES MANAGER DACH AT ALSTOM IN BERLIN NATIVE LANGUAGE: FRENCH DAILY WORKING LANGUAGES: GERMAN OTHER LANGUAGES SPOKEN: ENGLISH GERMAN LEVEL: EXPERT BEEN LIVING IN GERMANY FOR: 4 YEARS Axel's key message: “While Germany may not sound as sexy & exotic as many other destinations, don't be fooled" My biggest challenge Initially the language of course! But this is quite normal for non-German natives. At first, you will understand 1-minute of the meeting, the following week 10, and then it will be a case of business as usual. Myths and realities MYTH: Germans can be cold. Germans are not as welcoming as the French or other Latin people on first impressions as they wait to get to know the person before really investing in a relationship. REALITY: Germans get straight to the point. They do not care about the manner and are results-driven. You can forget the cute and attractive PowerPoint and go for a more conventional but more exhaustive presentation. My advice & top tips Go for it! What do you stand to lose? A great experience in an equally great country with equally great people! Quirky & cultural Coffee and lunch breaks are not firm favourites in Germany! You will stand more of a chance going out with your colleagues to afterworks in biergartens, enjoying some “off the- record” moments of fun. And finally... Don't sell yourself short, even if your German is not perfect, you have an accent, and you have no previous experience with German people. At the end of the day, this is what stands to make all the difference, your difference. Follow this link to read Go Germany in full

Go Germany! "Give your children roots and they will grow wings" (Goethe)

At that time, I was working remotely all week: it was not easy to start a new job in a new company and a new country under these circumstances. There are always a lot of things to discover when you start, and human connections help a lot with this. Myths and realities MYTH: Even if we have a good work-life balance, in my company we do not start the weekend on Friday at noon! REALITY: Work efficiency is very important and well considered in Germany. You don't go to work to put in the hours, you go to work to get things done. And once you are done with your tasks, you are really encouraged to end your day and go home. My advice & top tips I would urge you to learn and speak the language. Even if you work in an English-speaking environment, it is always helpful for your integration to know German (or maybe Bavarian if you come to Munich :)). Quirky & cultural Punctuality is important. Meetings start and end on time, and are usually very efficient! This means that you must be very pragmatic and well prepared to achieve your goal. If you're late, don't try to gain a few minutes by crossing the road at a red light! You would be the only one who dared, and you will probably get a few comments from the people around you. And finally... Pfiat di! (Which means Goodbye in Bavarian)! Follow this link to read Go Germany in full

My biggest challenge Adapting to work in a big multinational company which is process-driven with low levels of spontaneity. Myths and realities MYTH: People are cold-hearted, do not connect emotionally, and are always serious. REALITY: Work autonomy. Good work-life balance. The German language is important. My advice & top tips Do not be afraid! Come with an open mind and discover the German culture for yourself. You will enjoy it a lot and gain an amazing experience for your future. Stuttgart is only 3 hours from Paris by train, yet this proximity has a downside: you don’t get the 100% full-expat experience. Myths and realities MYTH The Germans work more than the French. REALITY Integration at work is not always easy due to the language barrier. Salaries are slightly higher than in France, especially in the car industry. My advice & top tips There are many opportunities for internships and jobs in Germany. At Porsche, for example, we're always looking for new interns and we're ready to hire good people. You just need to be able to express yourself in German and to give your best. Quirky & cultural “Weißwurstfrühstück” at work. A very special way to kickstart a day… And finally... Myths and realities MYTH: The people are very strict. FALSE. They have a particular way of working, but they are willing to help you every step of the way. REALITY: From day one, expect a heavy workload, but with discipline, the job can be done. My advice & top tips If you have the opportunity, do not hesitate to come to Germany. Also, do not say no to any plans, especially at the beginning. This will make both your job and your life much easier. Quirky & cultural The Oktoberfest is a very important event for the Germans. Once they know you come from another country, they show you all the tricks and explain the history of this tradition. And finally... I will never forget all the great people I have met in Germany and all the social and cultural experiences I have experienced during my time here. Follow this link to read Go Germany in full

Myths and realities MYTH: Quality is in every German’s DNA and is a key focus of the day-to-day activities. People are very direct which can be perceived as rude or employing a preachy tone. Can be difficult at the beginning with our Latin culture. REALITY: At work, very respectful of people and diversity. People are judged on their level of expertise and not where they sit in the hierarchy. Usually most German companies work with a very centralised approach to management decision taking. My advice & top tips I would recommend looking to work for an international company, so you can learn about the German culture and maintain a good level of international exposure. Command of English in Germany is very good in terms of work and everyday life. The unemployment rate in Germany is close to zero for engineers, so it is easy to find a job and the salaries are 20-30% higher than France. Quirky & cultural Very open to highly diverse backgrounds and showing no bias. Technical expertise is of a very high standard. Studying in Germany fast tracks your professional studies. And finally... I like the working environment that is akin to French working law. People have a more pragmatic approach showing less emotion and there is recognition for high performance and professionalism. Follow this link to read Go Germany in full

People are kind, helpful & understanding. Everything is organised and so, even though it might be hard going for many at the beginning, over time it becomes easier to make a living in Germany. Cities are very clean, and rules are followed." My biggest challenge The language! Not understanding references and jokes in German is a real bummer. Myths and realities MYTH: German workplaces are very hectic & serious. In fact, Germans are fun people to be around. REALITY: Germany is a great place to work. All the big cities including Frankfurt, Berlin & Munich have a large English-speaking crowd, but most jobs require fluency in German. My advice & top tips Focus on areas that you have already acquired professional experience in, because it is easier to get a job in that field. Work experience and cultural fit really matter, so really focus on shortlisting opportunities that really interest you, rather than shooting in the dark. Quirky & cultural The emphasis on perfection & time management. There is no such thing as overtime. And finally... Germany is one of the best countries to work in, even though it might be a little more expensive in large cities as compared to most other European countries. It is a very student-friendly country with a lot of subsidies and concessions for students and interns. Germany has great cities that are very well connected and travelling throughout the country is easy and fun. Recent government initiatives also make it very affordable to travel all over Germany. Myths and realities MYTH: It is a common misconception that every organisation operates with a rigid, process-oriented structure and a pronounced hierarchy. While this may hold true for large, traditional corporations, the reality is quite different in the start-up world, like everywhere else in the world. REALITY: The work environment is less gender-biased, with a focus on valuing individuals for their skills and competencies. Additionally, the German people exhibit a warm and positive disposition towards the French, embracing our culture with open arms. My advice & top tips Language barrier or not, the job market in Germany presents a vast array of opportunities. Last year alone, nearly 400,000 positions remained unfilled, indicating a significant demand for skilled workers. Take advantage of this unmet demand and consider applying for jobs in Germany. It is an opportunity too good to miss. Quirky & cultural One admirable trait about the Germans is their straightforwardness: they are people of their word, ensuring that what they say aligns with their actions. And finally... At first glance, Germany might not seem like the most enticing destination. However, many who venture here find compelling reasons to extend their stay beyond their initial plans. My biggest challenge As an expat in Germany, I have to say that the administration can be a frequent challenge (especially if you do not speak German). Whether it is for registering your flat (Anmeldung), starting your own business, etc. Myths and realities MYTH: Germans are strict and narrow minded when it comes to work. REALITY: Working at start-ups, my experience of working with Germans has been good. The fact that they follow the rules is because of the trust system they have (at work, for transport, etc.,) where what you do and if you validated your ticket go largely unchecked. Germans speak great English and adapt to people who do not speak German. My advice & top tips Come for an internship or work experience in Berlin. You will not regret it, especially if you want to work in the startup scene and are looking for a good lifestyle as a twentysomething living in a European capital. Quirky & cultural Forget all the misconceptions about Germany, especially if you come to Berlin, because Berlin is not Germany. This city is highly unique, the people are open-minded, it attracts a lot of artists, is cosmopolitan, and affordable. And finally... Since living in Germany, I have come to realise just how many clichés about the Germans, or indeed the country itself, are utterly misleading. This week, discover what Quentin Degroote from France has to say. About Quentin: GRADUATED FROM THE MASTER IN MANAGEMENT (GRANDE ECOLE) PROGRAMME IN 2007  FROM FRANCE CURRENT POSITION: REGIONAL FINANCE DIRECTOR AT MSD ANIMAL HEALTH IN MUNICH  NATIVE LANGUAGE: FRENCH DAILY WORKING LANGUAGES: ENGLISH OTHER LANGUAGES SPOKEN: GERMAN GERMAN LEVEL: EXPERT BEEN LIVING IN GERMANY FOR: 16 YEARS Quentin's key message: “Post-pandemic, the best surprise has been remote working for all" My biggest challenge Understanding the Bavarian accent! Myths and realities MYTH: Working with Germans is all work and no play. REALITY: The German work culture is about being efficient during working hours. You can start early and leave early when you are done. My advice & top tips Have a social life outside work, and not just with the French (more applicable for French students). Use the time to interact with different cultures. Quirky & cultural Germans cannot say Quentin, the French way. During my interview for a job in 2009, I answered the first question “Please introduce yourself” by pronouncing my name the French way. The interviewer thought they had their hands on the wrong CV. I appreciate that there’s "no gossiping" when you leave early from work. Whenever you leave work, your fellow colleagues assume you are done with your work. And finally... Trust yourself. Do it now before it is too late Follow this link to read Go Germany in full

Go Germany! In Germany, you keep your private and professional life more separate

Audencia's Career Center and Alumni teams are delighted to to bring you “Go Germany!”, the guide to working in Germany. About Mathilde: GRADUATED FROM THE MASTER IN MANAGEMENT (GRANDE ECOLE) PROGRAMME IN 2015  FROM FRANCE CURRENT POSITION: PROJECT MANAGERCONSULTANT AT VIF STRATEGIE IN COLOGNE NATIVE LANGUAGE: FRENCH DAILY WORKING LANGUAGES: GERMAN AND FRENCH OTHER LANGUAGES SPOKEN: ENGLISH GERMAN LEVEL: BEGINNER BEEN LIVING IN GERMANY FOR: 10 YEARS Mathilde's key message: “In Germany, you keep your private and professional life more separate" My biggest challenge  Rules are rules, so you must abide by them even if this sometimes makes less sense. Myths and realities MYTH: French people often tend to see Germans as very conservative and no fun. REALITY: Forward planning is key, leaving less room for improvisation. Free time is more important for the German employees. My advice & top tips Come prepared and having a basic knowledge of German helps. Berlin is not the only option, all other big cities in Germany are cool. Quirky & cultural My job is to accompany French companies in developing and establishing themselves in Germany. Always very funny to see how French people are “afraid” of Germany. Germans have a more consensus-driven approach unlike France, where people are more individualistic and do things their own way, caring less if someone else stands to suffer from this. And finally... On first impressions, Germany may not seem all that appealing but many people end up extending their stay. So, there must be good reasons for this. Follow this link to read Go Germany in full

Go Germany! Germany is a very multicultural country with many expats

Audencia's Career Center and Alumni teams are delighted to to bring you “Go Germany!”, the guide to working in Germany. About Fabrice: GRADUATED FROM THE MASTER IN MANAGEMENT (GRANDE ECOLE) PROGRAMME IN 2010  FROM FRANCE CURRENT POSITION: HEAD OF COMMUNICATION & DIGITAL MARKETING AT GROUPE SEB WMF CONSUMER GMBH DEUTSCHLAND IN FRANKFURT AM MAIN NATIVE LANGUAGE: FRENCH DAILY WORKING LANGUAGES: GERMANOTHER LANGUAGES SPOKEN: ENGLISH GERMAN LEVEL: EXPERT BEEN LIVING IN GERMANY FOR: 13 YEARS Fabrice's key message: “Germany is a very multicultural country with many expats" My biggest challenge The language when I first started working here. Myths and realities MYTH: I have often heard that Germans are cold and have no sense of humour. They may need more time to open to you. REALITY: The working culture is certainly different from what we see in France. The working hours are really about work. People don't drink coffee with each other or take a one-hour lunchbreak (in my experience at least). This obviously allows us to have working hours from around 9am to 6pm and to have time for other activities afterwards. The salaries are higher in Germany than in France for the same jobs but the money you’ll get for your retirement is lower than in France. My advice & top tips Apply in German! Your CV and cover letter should be sent together with the other documents in German. Applying in Germany means sending 10 to 15 pages of documents. This aspect is really formal here. Be aware of the specific German administrative procedures when you arrive. Quirky & cultural Being on time is extremely important: meetings start exactly on time and end exactly on time. I have seen people being kicked out of a meeting because they arrived 2 minutes late. I have also seen people leaving a meeting room even as someone was still presenting, since the meeting was officially over. And finally... WEBINAR | The 2-hour job search for working professionals

DATE: Wednesday 30 October 2024 TIME: 13:00 to 14:00 Paris time Looking for a new job is never easy. Paradoxically, as we become more skilled and more senior, it can become harder: fewer target roles, more competition and still the frustration of online applications that demand time and effort but give nothing in return. The solution – pioneered by Steve Dalton in his bestselling book The 2-Hour Job Search – is to sidestep the black hole of internet job postings and network your way to referrals, interviews and jobs. In this webinar we explore precisely how working professionals can adapt Steve’s method to target mid- to senior-level jobs with the same efficient networking strategy. We will discuss: The biggest mistake mid-career job seekers make (and how to avoid it) The exact type of outreach email that works best for working professionals Why you should (mostly) ignore your existing network and reach out to strangers How to supercharge your job search with AI and LinkedIn (and when NOT to use them) How long you should expect to job-search How to run your job search on autopilot and maximise your chances of referrals, interviews and job offers    REGISTRATION We have 200 free tickets for Audencia's alumni and students (use code "AUD-student" if the ticket does not show) About the speaker Steve Dalton is the former head of daytime careers at Duke Fuqua School of Business and is the author of The 2-Hour Job Search and The Job Closer published by Ten Speed Press. In 2014 the MBA-CSEA awarded Steve their innovation award for his work. He holds his own MBA from Duke and a chemical engineering degree from Case Western. Steve writes about careers for the Huffington Post and the Financial Times and presents his method at business schools around the world. My biggest challenge Finding accommodation in Munich or in the nearby areas Myths and realities MYTH Germans don’t work overtime. REALITY If you are a non-EU student and studying in France, be prepared to wait a long time for the visa appointments. The German government offices seldom use English or any other language other than German. For administrative purposes, always carry cash with you. My advice & top tips Germany is a great place for the next step in your career. You will find a lot of English speaking opportunities here and the chances of turning your internship into a full-time job are super high. Quirky & cultural Most shops are closed on Sundays and after 8pm on weekdays. And finally... Moving to Germany is a big step. You may have to deal with visa issues, but trust me, it’s 100% worth it. My biggest challenge The bureaucracy, especially for non-EU people. Secondly, finding a place to live. Myths & realities MYTH: Germans are thought to be "cold" and overtly bureaucratic, but so far, my experience has been that they are friendly and helpful. REALITY: There are very diverse types of companies in Germany, each of them with very different company cultures. My advice & top tips To gain a competitive edge, I would suggest the following: Try to obtain a good level of German; this will give you more job opportunities. It is also better if you have the relevant education and experience for the specific job you are applying for. Don't forget to obtain a work permit as this will give you access to higher positions. Quirky & cultural In Germany, when you have a birthday, you are the one who must bring in the birthday cake for everyone. And finally... Internships and job applications will take a lot of time. So, apply as early as possible. Follow this link to read Go Germany in full

About Paul: GRADUATED FROM THE MASTER IN MANAGEMENT (GRANDE ECOLE) PROGRAMME IN 2012  FROM FRANCE CURRENT POSITION: HEAD OF CENTER OF EXCELLENCE GROSS-TO-NET EUROPE AT SANOFI IN BERLIN NATIVE LANGUAGE: ENGLISH DAILY WORKING LANGUAGES: GERMAN AND ENGLISH GERMAN LEVEL: NATIVE LANGUAGE BEEN LIVING IN GERMANY FOR: 12 YEARS Paul's key message: “Professionally, there is a true understanding of personal situations: for example, when children are sick or the kindergarten is closed and need to stay home." My biggest challenge Still trying to understand the meaning of all the lines of different contributions stated on my payslip! Myths and realities MYTH: All Germans speak English very well. While this may be true for some, I also know a lot of people at work who are not very comfortable speaking English. REALITY: Germans are 200% accurate and usually on time. In my company at least, they are very flexible with working hours. My advice & top tips Just try it! Best case scenario, you like it. Worst case, you had an experience. Quirky & cultural On Friday afternoons my German colleagues usually leave between 2pm and 3pm And finally... Leverage the alumni network. If you come here with a plan of action, or at least an idea, of what you want to do and why, you will get the support you need. Follow this link to read Go Germany in full

Go Germany! From Biergarten to Feierabend, the German culture has so much to offer!

Audencia's Career Center and Alumni teams are delighted to to bring you “Go Germany!”, the guide to working in Germany. About Amandine: GRADUATED FROM THE MASTER IN MANAGEMENT (GRANDE ECOLE) PROGRAMME IN 2011  FROM FRANCE CURRENT POSITION: SENIOR FIELD MARKETING MANAGER AT SPHERA IN MUNICH NATIVE LANGUAGE: FRENCH DAILY WORKING LANGUAGES: ENGLISH (MOSTLY), GERMAN AND FRENCH (SOMETIMES) OTHER LANGUAGES SPOKEN: SPANISH GERMAN LEVEL: EXPERT BEEN LIVING IN GERMANY FOR: 12 YEARS Amandine's key message: “From Biergarten to Feierabend, the German culture has so much to offer!" My biggest challenge Finding accommodation! Myths and realities MYTH: Hierarchy is not so important, but it depends on the company size and the international background of the team.  REALITY: Fewer coffee breaks than in France in my experience, expertise counts more than small talk/networking. My advice & top tips Meetings: be on time and wrap things up on time! (Exceptions for international companies). Certificates of past jobs are still very important for next career steps and applications, to be included in (digital) CV amongst all things, showing your expertise (certificates of trainings, etc.). People start work rather early (7am to 7.30am sometimes), have an early lunch (11.15am or 11.30am or by noon at the latest) and finish early into "Feierabend” and have a very short lunch break (30 minutes being the standard). Quirky & cultural  People are quite open and welcoming and not as "rigid" as depicted in the clichés. And finally... Before starting a new job in Germany, plan to have a few weeks to get the administration work sorted once you arrive and before starting work (find a place to stay, open a bank account, register at the city in Germany etc). HR could also help with these things, of course. Give working in Germany a go. For me, this has proved very rewarding, and I’m planning on staying put! Follow this link to read Go Germany in full
