Go Netherlands! The Dutch are known for their straight talking

Audencia's Career Center and Alumni teams are delighted to to bring you “Go Netherlands!”, the guide to working in the Netherlands. Following the success of the guide to working in France for internationals, this new edition focuses on a country that is a destination of choice for Audencians. Members of its thriving community of students and alumni say they choose the Netherlands for its economic stability, work-hard-play-hard lifestyle, multiculturalism and for being a country where English is often the working language. “Go Netherlands!” is a valuable resource for students considering a career in the Netherlands after their studies. Starting with HR professionals’ top tips and debunking the myths and realities of the workplace, Go Netherlands! also showcases the experiences of more than 20 alumni who have aced the challenge of finding a job and settling in the Netherlands. This week, discover what Louis Blaise from France has to say. About Louis: Graduated from the Grande Ecole Master in Management programme in 2014 Currently working as: an International Revenue Manager at Britvic Teisseire International in Amsterdam Native language: French Other languages spoken: English, Italian, German Level of Dutch: beginner Been living in the Netherlands since September 2018 Louis' key message: “The Dutch are known for their straight talking; if they don't like something, they will say so immediately." My biggest challenge Companies in Amsterdam are very international; in my previous team of 25, there was only one Dutch person. My biggest challenge is a result of this: I’m finding it hard to learn Dutch and even when I talk to a Dutch colleague at work, it's always in English! My advice & top tips LinkedIn is clearly the best website for job opportunities. It’s also a good idea to contact past employees; almost all companies offer a referral system. If you target big companies, you will find that many offer a graduate programme scheme. Unemployment is dramatically low here and compared to other European capitals, there are lots of jobs where you don’t need to speak Dutch. Even so, not speaking Dutch clearly puts you at a disadvantage as it limits the number of jobs you can apply for. Quirky & cultural Be prepared to eat cold snacks at work... your lunch break will be relatively short and you’ll often only have time for a quick sandwich. Also, don't be too surprised if you see your Dutch colleague eating soup at 4pm! And finally Sporting activities come high on the list of favourite Dutch pastimes. There is so much to do here, from cycling round the city to swimming in the canals in summer! Read your copy of "Go Netherlands" here

#Iconic_Audencians: Henar Cabrera (EIBM 11), coming full circle

Henar Cabrera, European & International Business Management 2011, life coach & reiki master, San Sebastian, Spain When we reached out to Henar Cabrera, she was living in Dublin and working as an International Customer Service Representative for Blue Nile, an American online jewellery retailer. Fast forward to our interview only two weeks later, and she had relocated to San Sebastian in Spain, and was proudly calling herself a life coach and reiki master. We got swept away by one of those conversations that seemed to take on a life of its own. Full of twists and turns, just like Henar’s life, in fact. Growing up, Henar didn’t venture much further than her native Madrid, but her life changed gear the moment she understood she had to scratch that travel bug itch. Audencia’s EIBM programme allowed her to lay the first stone of her international career. From Spain, to France, to Germany, to China, to Ireland and back to Spain, Henar’s journey is a travelogue as much as a story of professional transition and spiritual quest. A quest for healing from childhood trauma, for independence, for Mr. Right, for a purposeful job, and, above all, for finding her true self. Henar has come full circle and returned to her home country; along the way, she has found her mission, to motivate and heal others so they can live their best life. Full of wisdom, Henar’s words encourage us to soothe our mind and to trust and listen to our heart, the essence of our being and a reservoir of joy. They will inspire anyone who finds themselves questioning their life choices.   Read the full article here   Audencia's Iconic Alumni It all began back in 2020 when we celebrated Audencia’s 120th anniversary by launching our very first iconic alumni collection. Go Netherlands! Finding a company to sponsor me was a major factor in deciding to come here

Audencia's Career Center and Alumni teams are delighted to to bring you “Go Netherlands!”, the guide to working in the Netherlands. Following the success of the guide to working in France for internationals, this new edition focuses on a country that is a destination of choice for Audencians. Starting with HR professionals’ top tips and debunking the myths and realities of the workplace, Go Netherlands! also showcases the experiences of more than 20 alumni who have aced the challenge of finding a job and settling in the Netherlands. This week, discover what Lanre Balogun from Nigeria has to say. About Lanre: Graduated from the MSc SCPM programme in 2016 Currently working as: an IM Production Planner at PVH Group BV in Amsterdam Native language: Yoruba Other languages spoken: English Level of Dutch: I plan on learning Dutch (good for permanent residency) Been living in the Netherlands: for 3 years Lanre's key message: "Finding a company that agreed to sponsor me was a major factor in deciding to come to the Netherlands." My biggest challenge I used to work in Italy, and the two environments are very different. The office communication style in the Netherlands is open and direct. It was a shock, especially coming from Nigeria, to discover that there is zero distance with your hierarchy. If your line of reasoning is good, you can challenge anyone and anything; you realise that your input is needed and valuable. The downside is that to validate a solution to a problem, everyone must be aligned, so decision-making can be slow. You learn to be patient. My advice & top tips You are encouraged to voice your thoughts and challenge other people’s opinions. Being direct is appreciated. Going to the office is more than just doing your job. Socialising at work is part of building your connections. You need to be friendly and open at work. Quirky & cultural I was expecting some form of food culture, but I haven’t found it yet, so I’ve taken up cooking! Arriving from Italy, I was used to having quite a long lunch break with 3 different courses, coffee, chit-chat, and then be back in the office by 2pm. Seeing the Dutch often just having a cheese sandwich took me a while to get used to. And finally The first time I came to the Netherlands was for my interview. When I arrived, I saw everyone cycling and this was the first thing I fell in love with. There were parents taking their kids to school on cargo bikes and bringing their groceries home. Wow, that was really something! Consequently, living here has allowed me to stay active while reducing my carbon footprint. And lol, it’s got a great nightlife scene and Amsterdam is a decent place for queer folks. Read your copy of "Go Netherlands" here

    #Portrait - Audrey PHILIPPONNEAU (GE 20 ing-man) - Fusions-acquisitions

Go Netherlands! 3 words to describe the Netherlands: organised, straightforward and friendly

Audencia's Career Center and Alumni teams are delighted to to bring you “Go Netherlands!”, the guide to working in the Netherlands. This week, discover what Fanny Beaumont-Perez from France has to say. About Fanny: Graduated from the Grande Ecole Master in Management programme in 2007 Currently working as: Head of Internships ot The Hotel Management School in Maastricht Native language: French Other languages spoken: English, Dutch, Spanish Level of Dutch: advanced Been living in the Netherlands: since 2016 Fanny's key message: "If I had just three words to describe the Netherlands, I would say organised, straightforward and friendly." My biggest challenge When I first arrived, I had to get used to the directness of Dutch people and to the fact that they have no real sense of hierarchy. My advice & top tips My main piece of advice is “just go for it”! Dutch people are very direct and are not afraid to speak their mind. They are also very organised and always thinking about the efficiency of processes. Living in the Netherlands is really nice; if you come here, you’ll be guaranteed a great quality of life! Quirky & cultural Dutch people may be perceived as "cold" people but on the contrary, they are very friendly and always find a good reason to celebrate something with colleagues, family and friends. And finally I think that the Dutch generally have a positive mind-set and outlook in life. If we compare them to the French for instance, they will see the glass more as half full rather than half empty. Read your copy of "Go Netherlands" here

#Iconic_Audencians: Fulgence Ouedraogo (DCP 19), Captain Courage

Fulgence Ouedraogo, Executive Education DCP 2019, professional rugby player Fulgence Ouedraogo is the tireless tackler and captain of the iconic Montpellier Hérault Rugby Club, in the South West of France. Loyal to the club where he started as a pro, “Fufu” has been described as a role model and the soul of Montpellier. In 2011, he led his team to the final of the Top 14, the French professional rugby union club competition… gritting his teeth to ignore the pain of a broken hand. His international record is equally impressive. He has participated in several Six Nations tournaments (in 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2013), won the Under 21 World Cup Championship, and faced the mighty All Blacks in the World Cup final in 2011. With a height of 1m91 (6’3”) and weighing 99kg (15.5 stone), this gentle giant is highly respected for his integrity and bravery. Learning about his challenging start in life sheds some light onto his special qualities. Born in Burkina Faso, his parents sent him on his own to France when he was three, to be raised by a foster family. They hoped that this upbringing would give him access to a better education. Against all odds, Fulgence has pursued an exceptional sporting journey and he is grateful for how fulfilling his life has turned out to be. But he is still battling with unanswered questions around the merits of his parents’ decision. The athlete refers to rugby as a school of life that has helped him to take control of his destiny equipping him with crucial skills on and off the field. In 2017, in anticipation of his post-sporting career, Fulgence enrolled on an executive education programme at Audencia that he successfully combined with his intensive training regime. Fulgence shares with us his efforts to make peace with a troublesome past, his passion for the noble sports, and a few of his favourite pleasures as a father raising young children in the countryside.   Read the full article here   Audencia's Iconic Alumni It all began back in 2020 when we celebrated Audencia’s 120th anniversary by launching our very first iconic alumni collection. About Aanchal: Graduated from the MSc IM programme in 2021 Currently working as: Project Management Officer at Siemens in The Hague Native language: Hindi Other languages spoken: English, French Level of Dutch: beginner Been living in the Netherlands: since July 2021 Aanchal's key message: “The Netherlands is a super safe place to live.” My biggest challenge Understanding cultural differences! The Dutch are more straightforward, and it took me a little time to comprehend that. However, the Dutch are supportive and helpful and believe that everyone should have the opportunity to develop and grow. I like the work environment here and I find my learning curve is indeed improving. My advice & top tips Be confident in what you can offer a company. Read up on the country, its rules and culture before the interview. Language is not a huge barrier when working in the Netherlands as most people speak English, making it easy for internationals to fit in. I recommend the following websites: iamexpat.nl expatica.com/nl meetup.com/nl-NL Quirky & cultural My most memorable experience to date was a 2-day office trip celebrating successful projects. Due to Covid, it was mainly online but I had the opportunity to meet all the members of my team and interact with them. I also enjoyed Dutch food, Dutch party and Dutch games. And finally The Netherlands is a diverse, mesmerising and fun place to live! Read your copy of "Go Netherlands" here

Go Netherlands! Introducing the new guide to working in the Netherlands

This week, discover what the Audencia's alumni ambassador in the Netherlands, Matthieu Vonthron (GE 05), has to say. After living and working in Germany, South Korea, Singapore and France, I arrived in Amsterdam 5 years ago. The biggest challenge in the move from France to the Netherlands was having to give up those long French-style lunch breaks with colleagues! Here, the Dutch typically eat a cold, light lunch (bread, fruit and dairy) in under 30 minutes. On my first day at work, my boss invited me for lunch (we both paid our share at the company canteen) and ordered a slice of bread, a portion of butter and a glass of milk. Once seated, he spread the butter on the toast and pulled out a miniature box of chocolate sprinkles (“hagelslag”) which he then delicately scattered over the buttered bread: that was his lunch! If I have a single piece of advice for students and alumni who wish to work in this amazing country, it is to always be on time - one minute late is already late! Alongside punctuality, it is also advisable to be clear and precise with Dutch colleagues and friends as they typically dislike or misunderstand messages that are too implicit. This also means that the Dutch are very direct, so be prepared for (constructive) criticism. Unlike the team structure in France, hierarchy in the Netherlands is very "flat" or horizontal. Dutch team members are encouraged to speak out and challenge their managers. The work atmosphere is therefore much more open and transparent. Speaking Dutch isn't required to settle down in the Netherlands, however, keep in mind that learning the basics will help you integrate locally. And finally… the Dutch have a great sense of humour and love to have fun. I must warn you that they tend to get quite noisy when they do so. There is a time for work and a time for play so be prepared to work hard and play hard. Read your copy of "Go Netherlands" here

#Iconic_Audencians: Céline Assimon (GE 01), the sparkling chameleon

Céline Assimon, Grande Ecole 2001, CEO of De Beers Jewellers and De Beers Forevermark How did the daughter of a construction contractor with no connections, who grew up in a rural area of south-western France surrounded by cows, ever become the first female CEO of one of the most prestigious jewellery brands in the world? This is the remarkable trajectory of Céline Assimon. In 2001, she started in marketing with Piaget in NYC, then in 2011 for Louis Vuitton in NYC followed by Paris in 2015 as the worldwide head of high jewellery & high watchmaking sales, before re-joining Piaget in Geneva as its international high jewellery director. In 2018, at 41, she landed her first CEO position with Swiss de Grisogono. Today she holds no less than two CEO roles, as the head of De Beers Jewellers and De Beers Forevermark. She takes pride in the mining giant for its engagement in tracing every diamond it discovers and sells, and for raising high business, environmental and social standards for its own operations and the industry as a whole. Céline’s mission is to engage her consumers in both the beauty of the crafted diamonds as well as the beauty of their story, so that these precious symbols of connection and celebration can be worn with pride. When we explain to Céline that this portrait series aims to reveal the human nature behind Audencia’s iconic alumni, she is immediately up for it. She tells of her regret that she didn’t identify inspiring leaders she could relate to when she was studying at Audencia 20 years ago. At the time, “They all seemed to have this cookie-cutter life, the suit and the wife at home. I wish I’d had access to CEOs who shared their personal stories, successes, mistakes and the fact that you can thrive if you learn from them.” Looking back at her career to date, Céline makes a point of emphasising the hurdles she had to overcome. She is convinced that she wouldn’t have reached her current position if there hadn’t been a few difficulties and failures along the way. She highlights three in particular: her father’s struggles with running his business, her own countless rejections in the search for her first internship, and the experience of taking de Grisogono through bankruptcy. Céline has long established her reputation in this coveted industry, but she doesn’t take success for granted. “I am trying to look to the future with a cool head and a dose of humility. Careers nowadays are very fluid, and I might not have my CEO title in a few years from now.” It is with the same refreshing candour that this self-described chameleon, petrol head and bon vivant reveals her immersion into the African American culture, her best red-carpet moments and her signature dish.   Read the full article here   Audencia's Iconic Alumni It all began back in 2020 when we celebrated Audencia’s 120th anniversary by launching our very first iconic alumni collection.

D'autres suivront... Suivez ses aventures sur :

#Audencia_Worldwide “Audencia Around the World” is an event for alumni and students who are currently living and working in different cities worldwide. In 2022, for its fourth edition, Audencians around the world are embarking on a slightly different journey. #Iconic_Audencians: Taghi Taghi-zada (IMM 09), a young lifetime of learning

Taghi Taghi-zada, MSc IM 2009, Co-Head of Global Physical Trading at SOCAR, Switzerland At 36, Taghi has moved up the professional ladder with remarkable speed. At 21, when he was head of logistics for a firm specialising in luxury goods and design, the only way up was to take his CEO’s place. Given that the CEO was also the founder of the firm, the two of them had a no-holds-barred discussion after which they agreed that with Taghi’s potential, the CEO would support him in aiming even higher and he subsequently secured a prestigious scholarship to study at Audencia. By 24, he had studied – and graduated – on 3 different continents. Just a few months before his 30th birthday this young Azeri, born and raised in Baku, relocated to Geneva to work for the trading branch of SOCAR, the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan Republic. “I had never planned to work in the oil and gas industry – I come from a family of doctors and academics – but when you grow up in Baku, there’s always a little bit of oil running through your veins.” In March 2021, Taghi was promoted to Co-Head of Global Physical Trading at SOCAR, a role which gives him responsibility for trading 1 million barrels of crude oil per day while managing teams of traders in offices in Geneva, London, Singapore, Dubai and Houston. Although he clocks up gruellingly long hours, Taghi still makes time to satisfy an enduring passion for football (much more about that later) and run a youth charity in Azerbaijan. We speak to Taghi during his precious holiday time, back home in Baku with his family. During our conversation, we learn more about his ambitions for a greener future for his children and discover that his lasting love of France even led him to co-found Baku’s first crêperie with a fellow Audencia alum!   Read the full article here   Audencia's Iconic Alumni It all began back in 2020 when we celebrated Audencia’s 120th anniversary by launching our very first iconic alumni collection.

#Iconic_Audencians: Beauty Manake (MSc FAM 15), Botswana’s first female minister of agriculture

Beauty Manake, MSc FAM 2015, Assistant Minister of Agricultural Development and Food Security, Botswana It took 6 months to pin her down for a promised interview, but given our subject’s status, we knew that we had to be patient and understanding. To say that Beauty Manake has a jam-packed schedule is an understatement. Not even a year and a half into her first and prominent political role, she is in charge of nothing less than Botswana’s food security and agricultural strategy, and the pandemic has forced her country into a state of public emergency. This mother of two and CEO of Kungo Farms has gone into politics with a view of fulfilling her long-held dream: transforming agricultural practices in order to ensure the self-sufficiency and sustainability of the country she loves intensely. We are glad to have persevered because, as a result, we get a special glimpse into the fascinating life of a high-profile yet unorthodox politician. Beauty shares her memories of an upbringing, which did not preordain her to the eminent career she leads. She tells us why, swimming against the tide, she decided to move into farming and she recalls in vivid detail the day she found out about her ministerial role. In fact, once we get Beauty on the phone, she talks enthusiastically and endlessly. “Forgive me, I’m a politician, I talk too much!” she apologises, tongue in cheek. Revealing her candid nature, she confesses, “Thank you for hunting me down so relentlessly for this interview. I didn’t realise I had so much to share about my own life story. I am so glad for the opportunity you have given me to appreciate where I come from and what I have accomplished”.   Read the full article here   Audencia's Iconic Alumni It all began back in 2020 when we celebrated Audencia’s 120th anniversary by launching our very first iconic alumni collection. Rithy Huot (MSc IM 12) is part of the Cambodian river cleanup initiative

Rithy Huot (MSc IM 12) is director of department in the Cambodian Ministry of Tourism and one of his roles is to promote the clean and green aspects of his country. On 18 March he saw the launch of the River Cleanup initiative. "My responsibility in this project was to work closely with my partner River Ocean Cleanup to bring the garbage collection boat to Cambodia." The garbage collection boat collects data on the location of a type of waste using drones and AI cameras. It can collect up to 30 tons of rubbish in one day. The campaign to clean Mekong River, Basak River and Sab River will last until June and has three main objectives: Cleaning the riverbank  Recycling the waste sustainably Educating residents of the river banks Rithy thinks it fitting that the river cleanup project in Cambodia was launched at the same time as alumni initiatives for Around the World that echo the efforts to make the planet cleaner for future generations. "Hopefully one day our cities will be clean on the ground and in the water", he concludes.

#Iconic_Audencians: Didier Gaffinel (GE 87), a steadfast rise through the ranks

Didier Gaffinel, Grande Ecole 1987, Deputy General Manager, Crédit Agricole CIB In 2022, Didier Gaffinel celebrates 30 years of service at Crédit Agricole. After 16 years of investment banking and its notoriously strenuous regime, he later transitioned to managerial positions, inheriting the huge responsibilities that come with heading up divisions of over 800 employees. What lies behind this enduring lifespan? Didier puts it down to his drive and competitive spirit as well as his ability to sense when his physical resources run dry. In these times of professional hyper-mobility, such a steady career can seem out of place. But there is a strong sense of corporate loyalty that emanates from Didier when he retraces his steps, one that has become scarce. He is grateful to a group that has enabled him to progress and even reinvent himself more than once. He has led emblematic deals for well-known French companies, such as re-nationalising the troubled Alstom engineering group, or privatising Gaz de France. But his commitment to the company does not prevent him from sketching out his vision of a post-Crédit Agricole life… which might entail trading in his suit and tie for a pair of overalls and rubber boots. Let’s meet a man who strives to be - in his own words - “a nice guy who stands by his convictions”.   Read the full article here   Audencia's Iconic Alumni It all began back in 2020 when we celebrated Audencia’s 120th anniversary by launching our very first iconic alumni collection.
