Pourquoi tu as participé à cet événement ?

Avoid burnout & build resilience: join the webinar on 8th February!

Relentless stress at work threatens not only our wellbeing and performance but also our health and career. In this webinar Monique Valcour, management professor and author, presents the current research into the causes of burnout, shows how to judge if we are at risk, and proposes a range of strategies we can use to escape stress triggers at work. The main cause of burnout for most people is a work environment that has become toxic. This does not mean we are powerless to react. In fact a range of strategies can be effective both to deal with peak stress episodes and ongoing chronic work stress.     We will explore some of the key approaches that can help, including: Prioritising self care – to replenish physical and emotional energy. Revisiting your assumptions about work – don’t assume everything about your workload and work environment is fixed. We will look at ways to try and change both. Reducing exposure to job stressors – different ways to avoid being “carried along in the current”. Seeking out connections – possibly from coaches and mentors but also from colleagues who may be suffering from the same situational factors We will also discuss when you might need to make more radical changes at work and how as managers and teammates we can work to create less toxic environments.   "Find out more about how to identify and avoid burnout", says Shyla du Cosquer, Audencia Careers consultant. "Monique Valcour will show you how to shift your perspective and seek out positive relationships and situations.” Audencia is giving away 200 free tickets for students and alumni   Interested? Moving transportation forward in Qatar

Féras Souissi, MSc (Master of Science) in Management-Engineering, Grande Ecole (2010)   Background: Féras Souissi of France has master’s degrees in customer relationship management and civil engineering. He graduated with an MSc in Management-Engineering from Audencia Business School’s Grande Ecole programme in 2010. Prior to that, he earned a Master in Engineering from Ecole des Mines de Douai. He is fluent in French, English and Arabic.   Current occupation: Féras is commercial manager for the GDVC Light Railway Transit System’s Depot and At-Grade Stations projects in Qatar. Once completed, this new system will provide convenient transportation for those living in, and commuting to, Lusail City. Féras manages a team of procurement officers, contract administrators, quantity surveyors and document controllers. His team handles the subcontracting and procurement processes – including sourcing, quote requests, prequalification, purchase order negotiation, contract negotiation and administration, payment certification, correspondence, claim management, and delivery of good and services. He also manages the main contract with the client. Féras loves managing a diverse team, including people from the United Kingdom, France, Lebanon, the Philippines and India. “When I finished my engineering degree, the reason I went to Audencia was to develop my commercial management skills. I am a ‘people’ person – I wouldn’t be able to do a job that requires me to sit alone in my office all day!” Féras says managing a team of individuals from vastly different cultures is also a daily challenge. “Most of my work, such as contractual negotiation and payment certification, is entirely communicating with people, in order to be as effective as possible for the commercial benefit of the project. On this project, I have been exposed to professionals from places as different as the Middle East, Europe, Asia and Africa … I have learned a lot from this experience in terms of communication and adjustment to different cultures. You may deal with problems when it comes to managing contracts, but your ability to adjust your communication depending on your audience will always be key to finding win-win solutions.” As an example, Féras explains that communication styles in Middle Eastern countries vary significantly. Communication can sometimes be more forceful than in Western countries, both for cultural reasons and because English is not the first language of many people in the area. “I sharpened my negotiation skills with Middle Easterners with my siblings while growing up,” jokes Féras, who was born in France but has parents and siblings from Tunisia.   Motivation: Féras’s parents inspired him to work hard and set ambitious career goals. “My parents grew up in Tunisia and went to France to find a better future for their family. I simply want to make them proud by having a respectable professional career.” He is also committed to his work, noting that his working conditions and lifestyle are good, and he enjoys the challenge of managing a budget of more than $1.5 billion. “I also really enjoy developing the skill sets of my team members. I believe that the keys to professional self-development are recognition and exposure to new challenges.” Féras’s next goal – his current project concludes in 2018 – is to manage a commercial office. Eventually, he plans to become an entrepreneur, perhaps in consulting. “In this part of the world, consulting companies are not responding well enough to new challenges. As an example, we are only just now starting to see that companies in Qatar need help with their cash flow and require more engineering skills to reduce their direct costs.”   Personal interests and passions: Féras enjoys sports, particularly football (soccer). “It’s how I relieve stress,” he says. He is also a mentor in the Aréli Emergence Programme, which helps young French students who come from disadvantaged suburbs, and from immigrant families with limited finances. The programme provides students with scholarships and mentors to help them prepare for the professional world. “I come from a neighbourhood where many kids don’t finish high school or go to college. Aréli gave me a scholarship and provided me with a mentor, both when I was in high school and while I was at Audencia. It is my turn to give back.”   Staying in touch with Audencia: Féras is still in touch with his fellow Audencia classmates – especially those who had also previously studied engineering. They take the opportunity to visit one another when they travel.   Advice to students and graduates: Féras says, “Audencia is very open to the world, so while there, you have the chance to travel, get a taste of cultural differences and learn to accept that within the same situation, different people don’t see things the same way. It’s important to be open-minded; never think that you own the truth.” He also stresses that it’s important to find a job where you have fun and are motivated. “Get ready to work really hard – and you’ll get wherever you want.”   Most memorable experience at Audencia: Féras says his experience at Audencia can’t be distilled into one moment. “Audencia opened doors for me and gave me options I wouldn’t have had with just an engineering degree. Contracts in construction require hard skills, but also management skills. Without Audencia, I would probably have focused on an engineering career. Now I am a commercial manager and am exposed to challenges even more in line with my interests. I owe this to Audencia.”

IMM alumnus, Robert Bowen, submits his PhD thesis

On his Twitter account he describes himself as a lecturer but also as a researcher on “food and drink SMEs and place-based marketing, a linguist and a touch rugby player/referee.” Robert Bowen, IMM 12, has just submitted his PhD thesis to Aberystwyth University in Wales. His field of study is international entrepreneurship and his PhD focuses on a comparative study of the internationalisation of food and drink SMEs in Wales and Brittany. Robert first came to Nantes in 2004 as an Erasmus student from Cardiff University in Wales. “Nantes has a strong connection with Cardiff” he says “it was logical to go there”. He stayed in Nantes for 7 years, teaching English at the university and the chamber of commerce, before enrolling on the IMM programme at Audencia. While studying at Audencia, Robert’s interest for entrepreneurship defined itself and became the driver for his next career move, a PhD. “After my IMM, I went back to Wales and started teaching and research for my PhD at Aberystwyth.” 4 years, 85,166 words and 404 pages later, his PhD became a reality. “It’s opened up new opportunities for me” Robert says. “I have a new position as Lecturer at Swansea University and my connection with Audencia came full circle when I was invited back to the school to teach a course on marketing to students of the IMM programme.” Congratulations Robert for reaching this milestone. We are looking forward to hearing that you have successfully defended your thesis (January/February 2018) and to seeing you soon in the classrooms of Audencia!

Re-invent your career: join the webinar on 7th December!

Changing career is difficult.  As we develop our skills and build a reputation in one job it seems harder and harder to let go of what we have and take on something new.   In fact, successful career changes don’t abandon either their skills or their personal brand: they find a way to translate and re-invent them. In this webinar Dorie Clark will show how you can leverage your skills in a new role and re-invent yourself professionally.   Leveraging your skills As we amass experience and expertise at work there is a natural tendency to specialise: we become better and better at doing our particular job but, if we are not careful, less suited to anything else.  Nobody wants to “start from scratch”.  But change may come whether we like it or not.   In this webinar Dorie Clark will explore: How we can leverage our current skills in a new environment Different ways of researching a new career path How test-drive a new career via “strategic moonlighting” How to get help and make contacts in a new sector. Reinventing yourself The parallel problem of career change is persuading other people, especially the people you know, that you have changed course.  Often those close to us resist: they like us as we are.  Choosing the right time to “go public” and crafting a story that makes sense are critical.   In the webinar we will discuss: When to talk about a new career How to bring your credibility and reputation with you How to use social media and content to raise your profile in a new field.   "Don’t miss out on your tickets this time round!", says Shyla du Cosquer, Audencia Careers consultant. "Dorie Clark is an inspirational speaker and tickets to her webinar last year went so quickly that she is back this year by popular demand”.   Audencia is giving away free tickets for students and alumni Interested? BRINGING “HOME SOLAR” TO IKEA IN BELGIUM

Christelle Lafon-Paredes, Master in Management (2001)   Background: Christelle Lafon-Paredes earned a Master in Management in Audencia Business School’s Grande Ecole programme in 2001. Since that time, she has worked in her home country of France as well as in the United States and Belgium, holding positions with organisations and companies such as the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, the French Red Cross and IKEA. “Being in socially conscientious companies is very important to me,” she says.   Current occupation: Christelle’s new position with IKEA as home solar country roll-out leader for Belgium is both exciting and challenging. “Since I’m bringing a new service to a company that has been a leader in its core business for a long time, I’m learning a million things every day!” The job requires her to bring together a vast range of departments, synthesise the knowledge and needs of each, and make an overarching plan to ensure IKEA’s home solar service is rolled out effectively. “I meet with different functions that support the project, getting insight into how things work for IKEA at the country and national level. I work with marketing, HR, stores, finance, procurement and other departments to make sure everyone is aligned.”   Motivation: While Christelle enjoyed her previous positions in non-profit organisations, she is very happy to be with IKEA, where she believes she can have a larger impact. “Private companies think bigger and are more ambitious, so they are capable of reaching out to millions of customers in many countries.” She is also very motivated by living in new places. “It’s such a powerful source of inspiration and opportunity. It provides a chance to meet new people and grow professionally. For me, relocating for work has really been all positive.”   Personal interests and passions: Christelle loves to travel and spend time with her family. She and her husband, whom she met while working in the US, are giving their three children a multicultural upbringing. “We speak English, French and Spanish in the home and take international trips to make sure our kids have exposure to the global environment.”   Staying in touch with Audencia: Christelle maintains connections with her Audencia classmates and found her current job at IKEA through the Audencia Alumni Network. “I went through the list of alumni working in Brussels, contacted one who had an interesting job, had lunch with her and am now working for her company!” She has also taken the time to speak with Audencia students in Nantes about working for non-profits. “Audencia provides a good network,” she says.   Advice to students and graduates: Christelle urges her fellow Audencia alumni to travel abroad early in their careers. “Moving gives you more opportunities than you might have in your own county. Also, it’s a lot harder to move later on in life, when you have a family.” She also has some advice for handling culture shock when abroad, and for the challenges that arise when returning to one’s home country. When Christelle came back to Paris after her husband got a job there, she had to readjust to the work culture in France. She says working for companies that have an international workforce can help minimise culture shock, as can working in cities that are very globally engaged. “Belgium, where I now work, is a capital of Europe, so it is very international. Of course, IKEA is international, too, but also very Swedish. This is reflected in management, with a caring leadership programme that puts a lot of value on the worker: happy worker, happy customer, happy business!”   Most memorable experience at Audencia: Christelle explains that her programme at Audencia gave her the opportunity to go abroad for the first time. She spent a term in the US and then decided to complete an internship in Canada. “This opportunity was a great experience that really shaped the rest of my career and life. It gave me a little taste of something and left me wanting more.”

Moving sustainability and responsible management practices forward

Aditya Joshi (MBA 2015) Aditya Joshi holds a senior position in France as a management associate for FM Logistic, where he currently works in continuous improvement and best practices and will move into a role benefiting FM Logistic Corporate in France and its counterpart in India. Aditya’s position gives him the opportunity to learn the work culture of various company departments while taking part in projects related to quality, health, security and environment. He works with warehouses and distribution centres in a variety of sectors, such as pharma chemicals, health and fast-moving consumer goods. “It gives me a wide scope to understand all sectors and how their supply chains work,” he says. The initial challenge of the job, Aditya notes, was French language, but now that he is over that hurdle, he can focus on formalising ideas and communicating them in a convincing manner. “Implementation of ideas on such a large scale is a challenge – but quite the kind of challenge that I love to work on!” These challenges have also been accompanied by some pleasant surprises. Going into the job, Aditya didn’t expect special recognition from his director for his knowledge of sustainability and responsible management practices – a key part of his programme at Audencia Business School. “But I was given a representative role for the local governmental conferences on energy management and ecological measures, where I played an instrumental part in guiding the company towards new labels and standards for sustainability.” Aditya notes that the company was already moving forward without a formal process, and that this is a great next step. Aditya will also be piloting a corporate-level sustainable development project in France under the guidance of his director. “I guess the MBA at Audencia, along with my passion to continue contributing to the world in some way, is useful!” Aditya plans to implement sustainable practices in every role he pursues. “Eventually, I want to be able to manage operations in a larger role – possibly taking on an entrepreneurial challenge within the next decade.” Passions: Aditya has three guiding principles that help him stay passionate about work and life: Always keep evolving and learning, whether it’s academic, cultural, travel-related, arts, music, sports … you never know where your next lesson will come from. Failures are just springboards to success! Use your interests to enrich your relationships with people and how you see the world. (For Aditya, this includes environmental initiatives, football [soccer] and music.) Most memorable experiences at Audencia: When asked about his time pursuing his MBA in Responsible Management at Audencia, Aditya says that what really stands out is “having friends and colleagues from almost every corner of the world and every possible work background.” He has fond memories of get-togethers, library study sessions, projects and parties with his Audencia classmates. Advice to international students looking to work in France: Aditya, who is from India but now lives in France, has some practical advice for international students hoping to work in the country after graduation: “Speak French, make connections, go out there and meet more people! You never know where you will find your next referral or job. Back it all up with a clear CV and a good LinkedIn presence.” He notes that Audencia gives career guidance but, of course, cannot promise placements. “It is on you to keep the right attitude and go out and make great connections. You can’t expect instant results.” He says that the period between the end of his internship and the start of his position with FM Logistic was challenging, but he managed not to lose hope. “If you have the grit, the right sense and perseverance, something will come along!” Staying in touch with Audencia: Aditya says staying in touch with his Audencia classmates is very important to him. They share info, business partnership possibilities, advice on different regions, countries and sectors, and more. They primarily use social media to stay in touch. “We also help each other out with project recommendations and by connecting classmates who have not yet gotten the jobs they want.” Aditya tries to share any job openings he’s aware of with the Audencia network. “I always look for Audencia alumni whenever new positions are needed within my company or those of acquaintances. I hope to complement Audencia Career Services’ great guidance!”

Working at Google in Dublin, Ireland

Brice Dufour (GE 11) Brice Dufour has been with Google in Dublin, Ireland, since 2011. He is now a mid-market industry manager in education and e-commerce, helping French educational institutions and ed tech companies clearly define their goals, needs and online approaches so that they can build the best possible strategy for Google advertising solutions. “My job is to figure out how to best empower our clients to develop their success,” he says. When a client decides to expand to a new market, Brice helps them determine the strongest keywords and best practices for their ads and landing pages. Brice enjoys the challenge of his position in Google’s online team. He works with clients who have digital-based businesses in areas such as online education and training and ed tech, rather than with more traditional companies. “My clients might not be as globally well-known as bigger ones, but they are often more dynamic, and the impact my work has on these organisations is more important.” Brice also spends a lot of time training and coaching new hires at Google. “That’s a part of my everyday job,” he says.  This is part of Google’s recruitment strategy; the human resources department manages the hiring pipeline, but the working teams conduct the interviews, select the candidates and conduct ongoing training, coaching and shadowing. “We can make sure our people are trained in the best way possible.” Brice says some of the other perks of working at Google include free meals and an on-site gym and swimming pool. “The atmosphere encourages a healthy work-life balance, which is extremely valuable.” Passions: Brice caught the travel bug while studying at Audencia. “I first studied in the US and then in Finland. I’m now living in Dublin, a capital city with a great international airport – and the benefits of a small city!” Brice explains: “Living in a large city, you don’t have as much time. It takes so long to just commute to work, for example. In Dublin, everything is close.” In his free time, he has run four half-marathons in the past four years, in rain, shine and even hail! Most memorable experience at Audencia: “I met my girlfriend at Audencia! We’ve been together six years now.” Brice notes that while the training and skills he gained at Audencia have helped him in his everyday work, the most important thing is the people he met. “I made friends for life at Audencia. You experience something strong with people from all over France and the world. That’s how you learn about yourself and other cultures for years to come.” Advice to students or graduates looking to work abroad: Brice emphasises that it’s important to get involved in student associations, to meet people and gain different experiences that will help you develop in both your personal and professional life. “Three years after you’ve graduated, what you studied in your classes doesn’t really matter anymore. It’s the stories you can tell about your time in school that matter.” He notes that it’s also important to really consider location when making career decisions, and not just take a position because it’s for a well-known company. “Be sure you can picture yourself living in the city for reasons other than work.” Staying in touch with Audencia: Brice developed strong friendships with some of his Audencia classmates and stays in touch with them through visits and social media. In September 2016, he attended a Paris gathering of alumni who had graduated five years before. “No less than 85 of my classmates came together from places such as Dublin, Geneva, Amsterdam and, of course, Paris, confirming the importance of the bonds that link us.” Brice is also the ambassador for the Audencia Alumni Dublin Chapter. In this role, he plans social events and get-togethers for alumni. “In order to introduce people who share a common history through Audencia, I also organise regular after-works for the Dublin Chapter.” He even holds a regular online advertising solutions boot camp at Audencia for students specialising in digital marketing. “I’m happy to share my experiences with the younger generation.”
